You Can Breathe Easy Knowing DTPM Has Your Lungs When It Comes to Respiratory Care
October 24-27, 2021 is Respiratory Care Week. #RCWEEK21
We cannot forget that It is also the start of cold and flu season and respiratory care is so important because of how common and equally dangerous upper respiratory diseases are in general. For example, the most common respiratory viral diseases include the flu, the common cold, the respiratory syncytial virus, and the infamous COVID-19 virus that has made history sending the world into a global pandemic in early 2020.
How Do Respiratory Tract Infections Spread?
There are two types of respiratory infections, bacterial and viral. The difference between bacterial and viral infections is simple: bacterial infections are caused by bacteria, while viral infections are caused by viruses that are smaller than bacteria and require a living host to multiply.
These infections are spread by coughing and sneezing into the air causing contaminated droplets that are then inhaled by others. It can also be spread through contaminated hands, door handles, or any tangible items that can come in contact with your nose or mouth causing the infection to spread.
What Are the Common Symptoms to Look Out For?
Most respiratory infections are difficult to differentiate due to similar and common symptoms they all share including:
- Fever
- Runny nose
- Chills
- Head & body aches
- Cough
Symptoms usually show up between 1-10 days after coming in contact with the virus and can last up to a week as long as the patient has no underlining complications. Though common, these symptoms of a respiratory infection can cause more dangerous illnesses like pharyngitis to pneumonia, or conjunctivitis. If there are serious signs of infection, please contact your Primary Care Physician or seek immediate emergency care.
How Can We Treat Respiratory Infections and How to Prevent Them From Spreading?
For most viral infections, the classic “rest, hydration, over-the-counter cold and flu medications, and lots of television” is the standard protocol. For more serious infections, such as COVID-19 or the flu, vaccinations have become more of medical standard practice and are highly encouraged for those at high risk of severe complications such as autoimmune compromised and the elderly.
The best way to prevent upper respiratory infections is to wash your hands frequently. cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing, keep surfaces and items clean, and limit your exposure to those who are experiencing the common symptoms.
How Can DTPM Help?
DTPM can provide molecular testing that can help healthcare physicians determine the exact diagnosis of your respiratory infection and detect whether it is viral or bacterial to ensure proper treatment and care is provided to the patient.
